7 Ways to Increase AdSense RPM Without Increasing Traffic (For Bloggers)

You don’t necessarily need more visitors to earn more from your blog. More visitors will come naturally as your blog grows but you should also focus on increasing your revenue per 1000 pageviews without sacrificing user experience. First, let’s know the factors that determine RPM.

RPM of a blog depends on many things, primarily these two –

1. Your blog’s traffic country

If most of your traffic comes from tier 1 country like the USA, Canada, UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark etc. then it’ll be higher compared to tier 2 and 3 countries.

2. Niche

2nd one is your niche. If you have a niche where there are more advertising demand like product based niche – tech/devices, beauty, insurance, AI, cars, digital marketing etc. And if your niche is different from that like news, entertainment, general media, regional (niched down blogs) then rpm will be comparatively lower.

Nonetheless, you can still achieve maximum rpm on your ad network without hurting user experience with a few adjustments.

How to increase AdSense RPM of a blog

1. Identify your highest RPM articles

  • Find the articles that already generate the most revenue per 1,000 pageviews.
  • Find high traffic posts with low RPM.
  • Prioritize improvements on pages that get good traffic but RPM is low.

2. Optimize ad placement

The most important thing if you are running ads on your blog. Not too many ads but place them carefully. For a proper ad placement you can do the following –

  • One ad after the title or heading at the top.
  • In article ads that appear inside the article with sufficient gaps, make sure to leave enough gaps so that the user doesn’t end up seeing ads only. (you can control this on your ad network settings)
  • Use sidebar ads on desktop if your theme supports
  • Use anchor ads on both desktop and mobile, should occupy small area either at the top or bottom.
  • Review how ads appear on mobile and desktop, especially within long form articles.
  • Remove placements that obstruct reading or create accidental clicks.

Why it works: Better viewability and more eligible ad impressions can increase revenue per pageview. More ads do not automatically mean more revenue but proper placement and ad load does.

3. Improve ad viewability and page speed

Make sure your ad loads perfectly and keep your article font bigger than 18px on mobile so there is a good amount of in article ads to display to users as they scroll down to read.

Avoid excessive scripts and unnecessary plugins. Try to improve Core Web Vitals, particularly LCP and INP. Make sure there is no layout shift. Try lazy load image and webp image serving for faster load.

4. Use a premium Ad network

If you are using Google Adsense or similar ad network then consider upgrading to better alternatives like Ezoic, Mediavine, Raptive, journey by Mediavine, media.net etc if your blog satisfies their requirements.

Ezoic requirements: 250000+ monthly active users for new publishers. High traffic threshold under current requirements.

Mediavine requirements: At least $5000 in annual ad revenue. Original content, clean traffic and Google policy compliance.

Raptive requirements: 25000 monthly pageviews. Strong original content and a substantial share of traffic from premium ad markets.

Journey by Mediavine requirements: At least 1000 premium sessions in 30 days. Suitable for smaller, growing blogs.

Media.net requirements: No minimum requirements, Publisher approval depends on site and traffic quality.

5. Update content with stronger commercial intent

Some topics attract advertisers willing to pay more because readers are closer to making a purchase.

What you can do is add Relevant Keywords that are missing in these articles. Make sure you add them naturally so it doesn’t feel like forced and stuffed.

Examples include:

  • Product comparisons and buying guides like gardening tools, gadgets, beauty products, fashion etc
  • Software reviews and alternatives
  • Insurance, finance, and business services
  • Product pricing, features, and cost comparisons

You can improve the commercial usefulness of existing content without chasing additional traffic. Keep recommendations accurate and genuinely useful, don’t change your niche to make more money, just optimize.

6. Add affiliate revenue to existing posts

Display ads aren’t the only way to monetize a pageview. You can add relevant affiliate links to tutorials and reviews and Include comparison tables where they help readers choose. If done right and your niche has affiliate potential you can actually make more money than by displaying ads.

Make sure to clearly disclose affiliate relationships.

7. Improve engagement and pages per session

A very important section which can reduce bounce rate and increase your RPMs. However, this raises revenue per visitor, not necessarily page RPM itself. Overall it’s the same thing.

You can help your existing visitors discover relevant content by adding –

  • Contextual internal links
  • Recommend related tutorials and guides.
  • Make long articles easier to navigate. (table of contents)
  • Remove intrusive pop ups and distracting layouts.

If it’s not possible for you to apply everything I mentioned here you should at least focus on ad placement, high RPM Keywords/topics, font size, minimal code/plugins and user engagement. That’s it form my side I hope it helps. You can checkout more of my articles.
